Whether you’re a fashion enthusiast or someone looking to streamline their closet, these five essential fashion items are must-haves that will elevate your style and ensure you’re always ready for any occasion.

1. Little Black Dress (the LBD)

You knew this was going to be on the list so let’s just get it out of the way. But it’s a classic for a reason! It’s versatile, it’s elegant and it doesn’t go out of fashion, ever, so get one and get the right one.

Different dress silhouettes are designed to accentuate various body shapes. For example:

    • A sheath dress is ideal for a straight or hourglass figure as it skims the body and emphasises curves.
    • A fit-and-flare dress with a defined waist is flattering for an apple or pear-shaped figure, as it balances proportions and creates an hourglass shape.
    • A wrap dress is versatile and suits most body types, as it cinches at the waist and offers a customisable fit.
    • A bodycon dress is best for those who want to showcase their curves and create a sleek, form-fitting silhouette.

Next, choose the right length. A knee-length LBD is versatile and can be dressed up or down, making it suitable for various occasions whereas a mini dress is more playful (Perfect for a sexy night out).

Finally, the most crucial aspect of picking the right LBD is how you feel in it. When trying on the dress, assess how it fits, how comfortable you are, and how confident you feel wearing it.

2. Really good coat

The thing about a really good coat is they just seem to go with everything. I have one that I always put on when I can’t find the right matching jacket for the fit, and, like magic, it always seems to work even when I think “There’s just no way”.

Choose a coat colour that complements your wardrobe and your skin tone. Neutral colours like black, navy, gray, camel, beige, and olive can be paired with all sorts of things. (Mine is actually a light blush pink colour). If you want to add a pop of colour, get yourself a statement coat too, but make sure you have a good neutral coat.

When trying on a coat, ensure that it fits well and allows for comfortable movement. Check the shoulders, sleeves, and length to ensure they’re proportionate to your body.

Pay attention to coat details and features that enhance functionality and style. Look for features like pockets, adjustable cuffs, a detachable hood or fur trim, a sturdy zipper or buttons, and a warm lining. If you’re paying good money, you want to spend your time making sure it’s a really good coat.

3. Decent shoes

Here’s a secret you might not know about fashion. The shoes cannot be underestimated. Cheap clothes you can get away with, but crappy shoes will bring down the whole look whereas a good pair can make a simple outfit look more polished and put-together.

Cheap, dirty, or poorly made shows not only detract from your outfit and your overall appearance, but they’re also no good for your feet. Plus, if you’re on you’re feet for any significant amount of time, you need comfort and support or you’re just going to have a bad day. Plus, as they say, if you pay less you’ll pay twice. Your cheap shoes will wear out so quickly they’ll need to be replaced constantly and in the end, you’ll have spent more than if you’d just bought good ones to begin with.

Shoes should coordinate with the rest of your outfit but they are also a reflection of your personal style and can showcase your fashion preferences. Whether you prefer classic and timeless styles or trendy and bold designs, your choice of shoes can convey your individuality. Just make sure you put some thought into it.

Even if you’re not much of a shoe person – just get yourself a few really nice, really comfortable pairs, and it will make a world of difference to your overall wardrobe.

4. Boots

On that note… changing to a pair of boots can change your whole look. Whether you want it to be more sophisticated, or more edgy, boots will make the difference.

Boots come in so many styles, including ankle boots, knee-high boots, combat boots, Chelsea boots, cowboy boots, and more. There’s also different heel heights, from flat to super high heels so consider your comfort level and the activities you’ll be doing while wearing the boots.

Again, pay attention to the materials used in the boots, as they can affect durability, comfort, and weather resistance. Common boot materials include leather, suede, synthetic materials, and waterproof fabrics. Choose materials that suit your needs and climate conditions. Inspect the stitching, seams, and overall construction of the boots to ensure they’re well-made and durable. Quality boots should have secure stitching, reinforced areas (such as the toe and heel), and quality hardware (zippers, laces, buckles).

Of course, comfort is key when choosing boots, especially if you’ll be wearing them for extended periods. Look for boots with cushioned insoles, arch support, and a comfortable fit around the foot and ankle. If you can, consider trying on boots later in the day when your feet may be slightly swollen to ensure a proper fit.

 5. Perfect-fitting jeans

Jeans are essential. They’re easy to throw on and perfect for a multitude of occasions. And if you have a really well-fitting pair of them, you’ll feel comfortable and confident all day so make sure you get it right.

Take accurate measurements of your waist, hips, inseam, and rise. Knowing your measurements will help you choose the right size and style of jeans.

Jeans come in various fits, including skinny, slim, straight, bootcut, and relaxed. Try different fits to see which one flatters your body shape and provides the desired level of comfort. It might depend, again, on your body type. For example:

  • Hourglass: High-rise jeans with a slight stretch can accentuate curves.
  • Pear-shaped: Bootcut or flared jeans can balance out proportions.
  • Apple-shaped: Mid-rise jeans with a wider waistband can provide a comfortable fit.
  • Athletic or slim: Skinny or slim-fit jeans can highlight lean legs.

If the jeans are too long, get them fixed up to your proper height so they don’t get ruined at the bottom or just generally annoy you.

I don’t recommend buying jeans online. Different brands may have different sizing and fits. Don’t be afraid to try jeans from various brands and in different sizes to find the perfect fit for you. Once you’ve found a brand that works for you, stick with it. In fact, there’s nothing wrong with buying multiple pairs of the exact same jeans if you feel really good in them. Either way, try them on before purchasing to assess the fit, comfort, and overall look. Walk around, sit, and move in them to ensure they feel comfortable and look flattering from all angles.

By incorporating these essential fashion items into your wardrobe, you’ll have a solid foundation for creating stylish and versatile outfits for any occasion. Mix and match these pieces with other items in your closet to express your personal style and always look effortlessly chic.
